Retaining Walls

Retaining walls are often the largest element in a landscape. But whether large or small, retaining walls are more than just structures that divide a space, they can be designed to do a variety of tasks:

Support soil around structures and foundations
Prevent erosion
Optimize land by leveling it for increased usability
Terrace slopes to create different levels or outdoor spaces
Create a flow for the property

Wall Materials

Segmented block walls are made up of smaller modular blocks (or segments) made of concrete. One of the main advantages of using segmented walls is that they can be constructed quickly, with minimal disruption to the surrounding area. They also allow for flexibility in creating curves or transitions in your wall’s shape. We use high-quality, locally manufactured block. We choose the exact block you need based on the height and backslope of your wall.

Due to the nature of their structure, segmented walls, combined with geogrid, will give the strength and structure needed to build taller walls. This means that a retaining wall can be built with smaller, less obtrusive wall block that, in many circumstances, looks better than large-format concrete or stone.
Geogrid is made of a polyethylene or polypropylene material, and is flexible and robust. The voids in geogrid are filled with soil or drainage gravel that locks the layers together with the backfill material and increases the strength of the wall. Geogrid retaining walls can be less expensive than large-format concrete or stone walls purely due to savings in material costs.

When a different aesthetic is desired, we can craft boulder walls using boulders from 8” to 36” in diameter for a rustic look. For a cleaner, yet natural effect, we can use sawn limestone.

Regardless of the material used for the front of the wall, the wall structure is designed for efficient drainage, and with backfill of proper aggregates depending on the situation. Your retaining wall will be designed and built to withstand the winter conditions and freeze-thaw cycles normal to a Nebraska winter.

When planning a wall, it is also important to consider the design of surrounding structures. The retaining wall system shown was installed at a large home with an imposing roof line. Incorporating the columns and a stair case into the wall system complimented the structure of the roof line.

Staircases

Staircases provide a beautiful way to move around in a multi-level garden, and they add visual charm as well. At Well Rooted Gardens, we can design a stairway, of either block or stone, to match the overall look of your landscape.

Egress Window Access

Egress windows offer a means of escape in the event of a fire, flood, or other disaster. They also allow extra light to enter your house, creating a more inviting atmosphere.

We can install a variety of types of egress window wells, or even window wells simply to keep soil off of non-egress windows. These can be built as segmented retaining wall structures or corrugated window wells can be installed.
